The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, announced the news in Atlanta at 10 a.m. Monday morning at a press conference broadcast live on the archdiocesan Facebook page. The Archbishop noted that it was during Catholic Schools Week that Pope Francis "took one of our Catholic school administrators and gave him a new job."

Archbishop Gregory introduced Joel saying that after Joel had accepted the appointment he shared his own observation that the Holy Father has a "way of ruining a good night's sleep" – to which Joel agreed!

The Archbishop spoke of Joel's pastoral skills and ability to preach well, his engagement in the lives of young people and their families, as well as his sense of humor and his great pastoral heart.

Bishop-Elect Joel M. Konzen, S.M. Joel then addressed those gathered: "I am more than a little surprised and somewhat nervous… this is unlike anything I've done before."

He expressed his gratitude to Archbishop Gregory for his support during the past week and noted that, as a Marist, he has lived "sub Mariae Nomine" but that living "sub secreto" [in secret], until the official announcement was made public, certainly made for a "very long week." Joel also spoke of his appreciation for "Pope Francis' confidence in appointing me."

Joel referred to Marist Constitution #21 saying Marists are supposed to avoid ecclesiastical honors but admitted that was not easy to do when the Papal Nuncio presented him with the "will of the Holy Father." He also referred to the Marist charism and spirit as expressed in the oft quoted: Marists are called to "think, act, judge and feel as Mary would."

May Mary continue to be your guide, Joel.
