Marist Postulant Recognized for Musical Talent in Production Celebrating Leonard Bernstein

Niklas RodewaldMarist postulant Nik Rodewald, currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Composition at the Catholic University of America (CUA), was recently recognized for his musical talent in a production celebrating Leonard Bernstein; CUA Music and Arena Stage in Washington, DC, presented Bernstein at 100: The Theater Songs of Leonard Bernstein on January 26-28.

The performance featured students from CUA's Musical Theatre Division and the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra. The show included 28 new orchestrations, 24 of which were arranged by Nik, who was acclaimed as "a wonderful composer" by N. Thomas Pedersen, Head of the Music Theatre division at CUA. Nik arranged Bernstein’s iconic songs – including "America" and "Maria" from West Side Story, as well as songs from Candide, Wonderful Town, and other musicals – for piano, bass, percussion, violin and cello.

Bernstein at 100 Program CoverNik, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, received the 2014 Clare Fischer Award for Jazz Composition. He has recorded as a saxophonist and flutist. Nik with his ensemble, the Radiant Obscurity Collective, provided free concerts in Marist schools and parishes in the summer of 2017. He has also composed music based on the poetry of Thomas Merton and Gerard Manley Hopkins.

DC's classical WETA radio host, Nicole Lacroix, attended the performance and reported on her Monday broadcast:"It was extraordinary! Don't miss the final performance at the Kennedy Center on February 12, 2018."

Congratulations, Nik!

When you come together, each one has a hymn,
