The Gift of Fields
(Society of Mary e-Bulletin • Volume 6/Issue 8: April 24, 2018)

Marist Leon Olszamowski recently blessed softball and baseball bats, along with home plates at the sparkling new baseball and softball fields at Notre Dame Prep in Pontiac, Michigan.

A year ago an anonymous friend of the school donated $1 million to renovate the baseball and softball fields. It was the largest designated gift to the school in its 24 years of existence. "We're so blessed by the donor and by the baseball community," said Betty Wroubel, Notre Dame's long-time athletic director and softball coach.

The gift facilitated the installation of AstroTurf® brand field turf on both the infield and outfield of the baseball field and the outfield of the softball field. Also, both backstops and the softball dugouts were completely replaced.

The new fields had been on the wish list but were not priorities until the donor stepped up. "This was an amazing surprise; it got moved up in priority because when someone makes a gift of that magnitude..." said Gregory Simon, Notre Dame Prep's Director of Advancement.

It gives Notre Dame Prep one of the finest overall athletic facilities in the area. The fields are not named, but if the donor is revealed within 10 years they will be named after him or her.

It was a good day for the Fighting Irish!
